How to Hone a Knife – Honing vs Sharpening | Basic Kitchen Skills
How to Hone a Knife is an important knife maintenance skill. I will answer the question about honing vs. sharpening and teach you the skill of honing to keep your knives sharper for longer. While there are several types of honing steels available, a basic still will do the trick.
Place a folded kitchen towel on a firm, flat surface such as a countertop or kitchen table. Place the point of the steel on the towel and hold the handle firmly.
Place your knife at the heel (closest to your hand) at a slight angle and gently run the knife down the steel towards the tip of the knife.
Do one side and then the other. Repeat a few times, and wipe the blade clean.
