How to Poach an Egg – Basic Kitchen Skills

It’s Basic Skills Day, so let’s learn how to poach an egg. Poaching an egg can seem like a daunting task, but it really is a basic skill that you can master with just a little practice. The secret is a little vinegar in the water, which helps the egg maintain its shape.

=== 🍽🍸🥩 RECIPE ===
In a large pan, heat enough water to come 2 inches up the side of the pan.
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat so the water is simmering.

Add 2 teaspoons vinegar. This will help the white form an the egg hold it’s shape.

Crack an egg into an egg cup or small ramekin. This will allow you better control of where the egg falls in the water.

Using a spoon, stir the water to form a whirlpool. Carefully pour the egg into the center of the whirlpool.

Allow to cook gently for 4 – 5 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon, and carefully drain. Serve immediately.

Practice Point: Poaching an egg is about timing. It will take you a few tries to figure out how runny or hard you want your poached egg. 4 minutes is a good starting point.
