What Is Shakshuka? A Classic Dish With Global Roots

Shakshuka may sound fancy, but it’s one of the simplest and most flavorful one-pan meals you can make.

This classic dish — popular across North Africa and the Middle East — features eggs gently poached in a rich tomato and pepper sauce seasoned with warm spices. Every region has its own twist, shaped by local spices and traditions.

Today, we’re starting with a classic version to show you just how easy and approachable shakshuka really is.

If you’ve ever thought, “I can’t cook,” this is proof that you absolutely can.

=== 🍽🍸🥩 RECIPE ===
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
1 teaspoon cumin
Large pinch of chili powder
1 – 28-ounce (794g) can of crushed tomatoes
6 large eggs
Salt and pepper
Chopped parsley or cilantro
Optional: Feta Cheese

Heat the olive oil in a large sauté pan on medium heat. Add the peppers and onions and cook down until softened. Add the garlic and spices and cook another minute or two.

Add the tomatoes, season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Simmer uncovered until the sauce thickens.

Once thickened, make a small well in the tomato mixture. Crack an egg into each well. Season eggs with a small amount of salt and pepper. Cover and cook for 5 to 8 minutes over medium low heat, or until the eggs are done to your liking.

Garnish with chopped cilantro or parsley.
Optional: Add small crumbles of Feta cheese.
