Rye Manhattan Cocktail with Orange

Rye Manhattan Cocktail with Orange is my take on the original Manhattan, created sometime in the late 18th century. The traditional Manhattan is two parts blended Whiskey (usually Canadian) to one part sweet Vermouth with a cherry. Bourbon Manhattan’s are another popular choice for its sweetness. This adaptation uses Rye Whiskey for a more full bodied flavor with the citrus notes from orange bitters and orange. With all the choices of small batch Rye whiskeys available, each cocktail can have a subtle change of taste.

Our favorite Rye whiskies are Bulleit Rye, Knob Creek 100 proof, Dad’s Hat Rye, Redemption, and Woodford Reserve.

Rye Manhattan Cocktail with Orange Recipe – Makes 2 drinks
——————–
6 ounces of Bulleit Rye or any small batch Rye
3 ounces of sweet Vermouth
3-4 dashes of orange Angostura bitters
Orange slice to rim the glass
Orange peel for garnish

Chill a coupe or martini glass while you make the cocktail by putting it in the freezer or by filling it with ice and placing it on the counter beside you.

Combine rye, vermouth, and bitters in a cocktail mixing glass over ice. Stir vigorously for 20 seconds. Rim the glass with a slice of orange and garnish with orange twist, then strain the chilled cocktail into the glass.
