Whether you’re just starting out or just want to improve your kitchen there are certain tools of the trade that are a must have in every kitchen. And if you take care of them, and buy the best quality you can afford, you’ll have them for a lifetime! Here are my Top 5 Kitchen Essentials that I can’t live without:

1. Knives – 4 basic knives, chef’s knife, slicing knife, paring knife, serrated edge/bread knife. You don’t have to spend a lot of money. The right knife should feel good in your hand.
2. Cast iron skillets – Keep them well seasoned and use them every day. You can fry, bake, sauté – and they’re practically indestructible. Yes, you can wash them with soap, just don’t put them in the dishwasher. (Note we will do a full show on cast iron seasoning and care in the future).
3. Assorted cutting boards – I have a mixture of sizes and materials – both wood and plastic.
4. Dutch Oven – Enamel coated cast iron Dutch Ovens with a tight fitting lid are used for everything from deep frying, to searing, soups, braising and more. The are particularly well suited for slow cooking as they go directly from the stovetop to the oven.
5. Stick/probe thermometer – for that quick read of the temperature whether you’re cooking a steak or heating oil or monitoring a roast in the oven.
