How to Chop an Onion – Dicing an Onion | Basic Skills Day

It’s Basic Skills Day with How to Chop an Onion. Of all the cooking skills I’ve learned over the years, chopping and dicing an onion is the one skill that has made the most difference in terms of making cooking enjoyable. It is important to learn how to cut an onion properly—stabilizing the onion as much as you can throughout the cutting process, and holding the onion in a way that protects your fingers.

=== 🍽🍸🥩 RECIPE ===
In order to properly chop an onion, you need to know the difference between the root end and stem end. The root end has little stringy roots, and it’s the side that holds the onion layers together while you chop.

Slice the onion in half from the root to the stem, then cut off a small part of the stem end. Place both flat sides of the onion on the cutting board to limit the release of tear-causing fumes.

Peal off the onion skin.

With the chef knife parallel to the cutting board, make 2 or 3 slices into the onion, but not all the way stopping short of the root end. Then, with the knife on top of the onion with the point facing the root end, carefully slice straight down across the onion from one side to the other.

Finally, cut straight down across the onion, starting at the stem end to create a dice.
